MARGAO: Environment Minister and Nuvem MLA Alexio Sequeira announced on Saturday that the proposed new Borim Bridge will be constructed on stilts to avoid impacting fields and houses in the area. This statement was made during a function held at Verna Panchayat where fertilizers were distributed to farmers.

Sequeira has directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to conduct a study to determine the optimal alignment for the new Borim Bridge. The initiative aims to identify the most suitable route that minimises environmental impact and maximises construction and operational efficiency.

"The plan is not yet finalised. We will meet with the Public Works Department (PWD) to discuss and finalise the plan very soon," stated Sequeira.

Villagers of Loutolim, along with Borim residents and several affected farmers, have been actively protesting against the proposed new Borim Bridge, fearing the destruction of their a lands. Recently, they appealed to the Goa Coastal Authority to reject the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance for extensive khazan lands and CRZ areas in Loutolim.

"As far as the bridge is concerned, it has to be constructed. We will ensure that no houses are demolished in the process. Currently, I have instructed the PWD to conduct a study, and we have paused further action due to the Lok Sabha election code of conduct. However, I will soon meet with PWD officials to determine the optimal alignment for the bridge," Sequeira said.

He emphasised the people's right to express their views regarding the proposed bridge and its impact on their communities. "The bridge will be constructed; that's certain. It will be built on stilts to minimise impact. We are currently considering the latest suggestions, but no final decisions have been made regarding its construction," he added.

Sequeira assured that he will try his best to fulfil the demands of the people. It is worth noting that villagers of Loutolim and Borim have already filed a petition before the National Green Tribunal over the issue of the proposed new Borim Bridge.
