MARGAO: In response to a surge in fatal accidents largely attributed to drunken driving, the Margao Traffic Cell has intensified its efforts over the last five months, booking 16,274 cases of Motor a Act violations and collecting Rs 9,832,300 in fines from offenders.

PI Sanjay Dalvi of the Margao Traffic Cell reported that, during this period, 237 individuals were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol. These cases have been referred to the RTO, resulting in the suspension of licences.

Interestingly, the highest amount of fines were collected from owners of cars with tinted windows, at Rs 3.36 lakh. Twenty people were charged and fined for allowing an individual without a valid licence (usually a minor) to drive their vehicles. The statistics also showed that poor parking was a persistent problem with 4,879 people booked for dangerous parking and an additional 5,452 booked and fined for parking in no-parking zones.
