Steep rise in accidents raise question of road safety

PANJIM: Three accidents reported in various parts of Goa within 12 hours over the weekend, raising concerns over the continuing road accidents in the State. The first accident took place at Porvorim late Friday night. The other two accidents were reported at Quepem and Morjim on Saturday morning.  The Porvorim and Morjim ones were self-accidents whereas the Quepem accident was a head-on collision. Luckily no casualties were reported.

In Porvorim, a taxi veered off the road and rammed into a culvert late Friday night. 

According to sources, the driver is suspected to have fallen asleep and this led to his vehicle going out of control. According to Porvorim Police, the passenger sustained leg injuries and was immediately shifted to Goa Medical College hospital, Bambolim.

In another accident reported at Quepem on Saturday at around 6 am, a Karnataka registered truck collided with a car and dragged the vehicle everal meters away after hitting it. The truck was on the wrong side of the road and rammed into the car head-on. The car was totally damaged and the driver sustained major injuries. He was immediately taken to the Quepem Hospital for treatment. The lorry driver absconded from the spot after the collision.

In Morjim, a speeding rent-a-car overturned on the main road at Dabholkar Wada on Saturday morning. All the occupants however escaped unharmed. According to locals, the driver was under the influence of alcohol and lost control of the vehicle leading to a self-accident.
